‹ No More VB100 - Presents Latest Computer Security Technology ›
Since 1998, Virus Bulletin conducts multiple anti-virus comparative reviews every year, providing reference data to computer users. Dr.Web joined the test in the same year, which is one of the oldest participants in the industry.
Although the VB100 award becomes a valuable recognition, the testing methods failed to keep up with the evolution of malware. Only the viruses capable of replicating itself are included in the test. Because of the rapid development of the internet, virus infection no longer relies on traditional storage media. When new technologies and mutation capabilities have been widely used in malware, trojans and rootkits are becoming the major security threats. As estimated by Doctor Web, the virus samples used in VB100 test are only 10% of the total number of malware.
August 2008, Doctor Web issued an official statement about the decision to abandon the Virus Bulletin comparative reviews. In fact, among the well-known anti-virus developers, Dr.Web is not the only one giving up the VB100 qualification. It proves that other vendors in the industry question the comparative reviews as Doctor Web did.
Doctor Web can easily pass VB100 test if they intend to do it, but it is not their purpose. The company has only one challenge to meet, that is to invent the world's best defense system against all internet security threats.
